Oral Cancer Screening
Cancer is one the most fatal diseases that has claimed the lives of many. It is a disease that can affect any part of your body, including your mouth. Cancer of the mouth is known as oral cancer.
As with any cancer, the earlier it is found, the much higher the success rate is for any treatments used. The oral cancer screening process is quite simple. Our experienced dentists at
Mint Dentistry of Woodland Hills can perform an oral cancer screening during your routine dental visit for exams and cleaning.
The dentist will thoroughly examine your mouth, specifically looking for red or white colored patches, mouth sores, or any other abnormalities using advanced tools and techniques. Abnormalities of the mouth do not always point to cancer. Many people have sores in their mouths that have been classified as noncancerous, or benign. The dentist may also ask you a series of medical questions or lifestyle questions that could aid in the diagnosis.
If our dentists detect any abnormalities, then you may be advised to follow up with further testing procedures in order to receive an accurate diagnosis. Simply checking your mouth is not enough to diagnose oral cancer. The most accurate way of testing for oral cancer is through a biopsy, a procedure in which a tiny sample of questionable tissue is taken from your mouth and critically examined. Biopsy procedures are not painful as a local anesthetic is used to numb the area.
Certain factors point to increased cases of oral cancer. Such factors include smoking, heavy alcohol usage, and those who are aged 40 or older. The American Dental Association recommends that adults opt for an oral cancer screening during their routine dental visits. The American Cancer Society suggests that patients discuss oral cancer screening with their dentist.
It is our goal at Mint Dentistry of Woodland Hills to keep your oral health high. Good oral health translates into greater well-being.
