Deep Cleaning and Root Planning Services

The primary cause of periodontal disease is the accumulation of bacterial plaque at and under the gum line. And in order to prevent the onset of gum disease, Mint Dentistry performs deep cleaning and root planning services – designed to proactively remove plaque and bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease.
In order to learn more about the Deep Cleaning and Root Planning Services we offer here at Mint Dentistry, here are a few common questions and answers that should explain the procedures as well as the reasons you should consider deep cleaning and root planning in order to improve your overall dental health.

What Is Deep Cleaning and Root Planning?

Deep Cleaning and Root Planning is a special type of cleaning done by a dental professional (general dentist, dental hygienist, or periodontist). This procedure is designed to remove tartar and plaque from beneath the gums in order to restore positive health to your teeth and gums. Deep Cleaning and Root Planning tends to be suggested to patients that have not visited the dentist for bi-annual cleaning for quite some time. However, due to the fact that plaque and tartar always build up – even with proper flossing and brushing; many patients will have Deep Cleaning or Root Planning services completed as a proactive measure to increase dental health.

What is the Process for Determining if Deep Cleaning and Root Planning should be completed?

At Mint Dentistry we take several steps to determine whether or not you should have Deep Cleaning or Root Planning treatment.

- The first step in this process is the first evaluation. During this visit, your dentist will examine your gums for bleeding, swelling, color changes, tenderness or recession. The teeth are also examined for sensitivity and looseness.

- The second step is to have x-ray's completed. This will give the dentist a better look into the deep tissue and bone under your gums; to determine whether or not Deep Cleaning or Root Planning is recommended.

- The third step in the process is to schedule an appointment for this procedure. Root Planning and Deep Cleaning services are different based on the level of tartar or plaque build-up found in the oral cavity. During this procedure, the dental hygienist will carefully remove built-up tartar and plaque using special equipment designed to remove these often hard materials. Due to the fact that Deep Cleaning and Root Planning can take a while to complete, plus the fact that the procedures go deeper than traditional cleaning, for comfort purposes your mouth may be numbed.

Traditionally Deep Cleaning or Root Planning Services can take 1 to 4 office visits to complete – again, depending on the level of tartar and plaque build-up.

What Should Be Done After Root Planning and Deep Cleaning?

After you've had a completed Deep Cleaning service it is suggested to activate an aggressive and consistent dental hygiene process including:

- Proper brushing of the teeth (twice per day)

- Proper flossing of the teeth and gums (once per day)

- Follow up your daily teeth cleaning regimen with twice-yearly appointments with your dentist. The better your oral hygiene, the more likely you'll enjoy years of healthy teeth and gums.
