Here are a few facts about dentures and partials and the services we offer here at Mint Dentistry.

What is a Denture?

A denture is defined as a removable replacement for teeth that are missing. There are two different types of dentures – complete dentures and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used by patients who have all of their teeth missing – or their teeth have been removed due to multiple reasons, whereas partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain.

What is the Process for Receiving Complete Dentures?

If you and your dentist decide that complete dentures are right for you, there are basically two steps to this process.

First – all of your teeth will be removed by the dentist to ensure that the complete dentures will smoothly adhere to your gums.

Second - Traditionally the dentures will be placed after the gum tissue has begun to heal (approximately eight to 12 weeks after the teeth have been removed).

Complete dentures can be either 'immediate' or 'conventional'. Unlike conventional dentures, immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the wearer does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. The drawback however is that gums and bones tend to shrink overtime – especially directly after all of the teeth have been removed. As such, immediate dentures require consistent adjustments during the healing process. Immediate dentures are simply a temporary solution until the conventional dentures are manufactured.

What are Partial Dentures?

Known also as a 'bridge' – partial dentures consist of replacement teeth that are attached to a gum-colored plastic base. This base is connected to your gums by metal framework that remains in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures are used only if one or more teeth remain healthy in the lower or upper jaw. A partial is designed to not only 'fill in the gaps' of missing teeth, but also prevent the remaining teeth from moving or changing position. A 'precision partial denture' is removable and is a more 'natural' looking denture.
